fDi’s Global Free Zones of the Year 2020 – Mauritius ranked in the top 10

Article Published on December 22, 2020

The fDi issued the “Global Free Zones of the Year 2020" report in October 2020, which recognises the World’s best free zones. Globally, the Mauritius Freeport ranked 9th, while it is “Highly Commended" for the African region.

In addition to expanding its Freeport zones (2 additional Freeport zones were recently declared by the Economic Development Board), Mauritius has made considerable investment in its seaport facilities including an injection of USD 300m for the construction of a breakwater aimed at reducing downtime at the port during bad weather.

Ahead of the several bilateral trade agreements such as the AfCFTA, the CECPA with India and the FTA with China that will be finalised in the near future, the Mauritius Freeport and Freeport developers are working towards increasing their existing capacity.

The Economic Development Board, the investment promotion agency of Mauritius and the regulator of the Freeport Sector, is an active and voting member of the World Free Zone Organization (WFZO) and Africa Economic Zone Organization (AEZO) since 2019. This will enable the Mauritius Freeport to leverage and benchmark on international best practices and enhance partnerships between other member states.
