Global Innovation Index Report 2020: Mauritius occupies 1st place in Africa

The 13th Edition of the Global Innovation Index Report (GIIR), which is a co-publication of Cornell University of New York, INSEAD (Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation, was released on 2 September 2020.
The GIIR 2020 lauds Mauritius for the marked improvement that it has achieved over the past year. In fact Mauritius has gained 30 places on its 2019 ranking and now places itself 52nd worldwide whilst maintaining the top spot in Africa (2019 ranking: 82nd worldwide, 1st in Africa) as a result of a “mix of new data availability, data revisions at the source, and performance effects".

Over the past years, the government of Mauritius has recognized the importance of innovation as a game changer for the development of the economy. It has devised and implemented many incentives and schemes to encourage innovation, Research and Development namely the Regulatory Sandbox Licence, Investor (Innovator) Occupation Permit and Double deduction of qualifying expenditure incurred for R&D purposes scheme etc.
