The World Happiness Report 2020 (WHR 2020) shines a bright light on Mauritius as one of the choicest work and live destination for the region. With a score of 6.101, Mauritius takes the lead in Africa and ranks 49th worldwide (2019: 1st in Africa and 57th worldwide). The report reviews the science of measuring and understanding subjective well-being, and to use survey measures of life satisfaction to track the quality of lives as they are being lived in more than 150 countries. This year’s edition has a special focus on social environments for happiness, as reflected by the quality of personal social connections and social institutions.

At the global level, Finland takes the lead (7.809 points) followed by Denmark (7.646 points) and Switzerland (7.560 points).

The World Happiness Index is based on 6 key variables namely: GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption. It is then calculated how these 6 key variables contribute to that country’s ladder score, relative to that in a hypothetical country called “Dystopia", so named because it has values equal to the world’s lowest national averages for 2017-2019 for each of the six key variables.
